An updated blog post is long overdue! We have been quite busy in second grade working on oh so many things. In math we continue to work with number lines, the hundreds chart, place value blocks, and other manipulatives to solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers. The kids are AH-mazing to listen to when talking about math. It is such a joy to sit back and watch them talk about numbers! We even made a long number line with string where we were able to put numbers on using index cards with the numbers written on them. Pictures of that to come soon!
In reading and writing we have been taking a "workshop" approach. We have done a small unit of study on the wonderful author, Mo Willems. We practiced being "writing thieves," by looking at authors and deciding what parts of their craft we'd like to "steal" to make our own writing better.
As we wrap up our social studies unit on communities, we will be "writing thieves" once again to see what we can steal in order to make our own articles and classroom magazine. We have our field trip on Thursday to the Chicago Historical Museum, which will be a great opportunity to see up close and personal exhibits on how our own city and area has changed over time.
Lastly, we continue to learn more and more about technology each day. The pictures above (some from Halloween - a little late, sorry!) show how we used google drive to do a scavenger hunt to look for examples of text features in our Scholastic News articles. We then put the examples into a document to share with each other. Hopefully I will have some videos of student work to upload onto the blog shortly!
As we enter in to the winter break, I want to say that I am so glad to work with your children! They have come so far this school year and I look forward to seeing what the new year brings!
Have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday!
Cheers!
